AirMarker R.One vs. LZ LED Light Kit vs. ACR ResQLink 400
Three different tools that solve three different rescue problems: be seen from above, control the scene, and call for help. Here’s how to choose.
What each one does
AirMarker R.One Balloon Rescue Marker
Deploys a high-visibility helium balloon on 1000 ft line to put a “rescue pointer” in the sky. Gets rescuers to your location faster in timber, canyons, marsh, snow, or open water.
- Rapid visual fix for aircraft/boats/ground teams in daylight and dusk.
- Excellent for pilots, hunters, anglers, hikers, overland drivers, crew, SAR and small craft.
- Reusable system; pairs well with strobes/eVDSD and a PLB.

Landing Zone LED Light Kit (Rechargeable)
Six programmable, rechargeable LED markers in a rugged case for clear perimeter control and traffic management, instantly.
- Patterned lighting creates safe Landing Zones, and clean hot/warm/cold zones.
- Popular with fire/EMS for MCI scenes, road closures, and night drills.
- Also used by SAR, utility crews, LE, event safety, and training sites.

ACR ResQLink 400 Personal Locator Beacon
406 MHz PLB that notifies the Cospas-Sarsat satellite network with your GPS position and a 121.5 MHz homing signal for final pickup.
- No subscription required; registered beacon, global coverage.
- Ultra-reliable “push-button rescue” for solo pilots and backcountry users.
- Best paired with visual signals (balloon, strobes, mirror) to speed the find.

Simply put…
| Tool | Use it when | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| AirMarker R.One | You need rescuers to see your exact location from a distance (woods, marsh, canyon, open water, snow). | A big “arrow in the sky” that shortens search time. |
| LZ LED Kit | You need to control a scene: LZ, traffic, perimeters, training lanes, night events. | Clean, repeatable patterns that make operations safer. |
| ResQLink 400 | You need the call for help fast and when there’s no cell or sat service. | Worldwide distress to the Cospas-Sarsat system + 121.5 homing. |
Real-world scenarios
AirMarker R.One
- Hunter or Hiker broken ankle in the forest: PLB sends the distress; the balloon pulls the helicopter's eyes right to the clearing you crawled to.
- Boat adrift in fog: Balloon rises above the marine layer; pair with eVDSD/strobe to help a SAR boat find you.
- Overland 4x4 adventure, Snowmobile or ATV trip or skiing when stuck in canyon: The “sky marker” peeks above ridgelines when your radio can’t.
Landing Zone LED Light Kit
- Wildland/ICS: Mark hot/warm/cold zones and tool drops. Re-task markers for egress lanes when the wind shifts.
- Road MCI: Build a safe Landing Zone and channel traffic around the scene-no flares, no smoke.
- Utility or LE night work: Quick perimeter and “keep-out” lines at downed lines, water main breaks, or K-9 search grids.
ACR ResQLink 400
- Backcountry pilot off-airport landing: One press triggers a coordinated SAR response; mirror/balloon makes you obvious on arrival.
- Solo hiker with hypothermia: Weather kills batteries; a PLB still reaches satellites when phones fail.
Smart load-outs and bundles
How they work together on a call
- Call: Trigger the ResQLink 400 to alert the global rescue network.
- Mark: Pop the AirMarker so air/ground assets can spot you fast.
- Control: Use the LZ LED Kit to define safe approach, perimeters, and traffic flow.

Bottom line
Carry the ResQLink 400 to make the call, deploy the AirMarker to be found faster, and use the LZ LED Kit to keep the scene safe for landing and emergency personal. Together they save time when seconds matter.
FAQ
I’m going out solo. What’s the one thing I should carry?
A PLB like the ACR ResQLink 400 + AirMarker. It sends a satellite distress with your GPS position and a 121.5 MHz homing signal while the AirMarker and strobe helps rescue teams spot you faster when they’re close.
Does the ResQLink 400 require a subscription or “recertification”?
No subscription is required. You do need to keep it current in three ways:
1) Registration: Register the PLB (U.S. users with NOAA). Update your contact details any time they change and renew the registration periodically (typically every 2 years) or when the beacon changes owners.
2) Battery/service life: Replace the battery at the stated service interval (commonly 5 years from manufacture/installation, or after any activation). Battery replacement is a factory/service-center job and includes new seals and a full check. Your unit has an expiry date label-plan service before that date.
3) Testing vs. “recert”: Run the built-in self-test as recommended (many owners do it monthly). Use GPS self-tests sparingly to conserve battery life. After battery replacement or any real activation, the beacon is serviced and function-checked-this is effectively your “recertification.” Always re-register if your info changes.
How high does the AirMarker go, and where can I use it?
About 45 meters above you. Use it anywhere “line of sight” is the problem-timber, canyons, marsh, snow, or open water. Avoid power lines and busy airspace, and follow local rules.
Is the AirMarker reusable?
It’s designed for a single emergency deployment. Many customers keep a replacement on hand after use so their kit is always ready.
Will the AirMarker help at night?
Yes. It creates an elevated visual reference (led lights, reflectors) seen from far away. For night signaling, pair it with an electronic distress light or strobe so rescuers can home in faster.
Can the LZ LED Kit be used for more than helicopter landings?
Yes. Fire Departments, Rescue and Law Enforcement use it for roadway incident control, MCI triage areas, hot/warm/cold zones, training lanes, shoreline markers, and night event perimeters.
How do the LZ markers charge and carry?
The kit includes six rechargeable beacons that store in a rugged case with charge indicators. You can charge from the wall or from a 12 V vehicle outlet. The markers are quick to stage and easy to see in patterned layouts.
Are the LEDs bright enough for daytime work?
They’re most effective at dusk, night, and low-light, but crews still use them in daylight to reinforce cones, signs, and tape. Patterned placement improves visibility in sun and dust.
Do I have to register the ACR PLB, and how do I test it?
Yes-registering your PLB is required and helps rescue contact you quickly. For testing, use the manufacturer’s self-test mode so you don’t trigger a real alert. You can only test so many times so read before you go wild.
I’m a boater. Will I be legal at night with an electronic distress light?
An eVDSD covers the night signal requirement when carried properly; you still need an approved day signal. Many boaters pair an eVDSD with a day smoke or streamer and add an AirMarker for faster visual pickup.
Best two-item combo for wilderness or water?
ResQLink 400 with Laser + AirMarker. The beacon makes the call. The balloon makes you obvious when rescuers arrive.
Best two-item combo for agencies managing scenes?
LZ LED Kit + strobes. Reusable perimeter control with high-visibility lighting for approach, traffic, and zones.
