Common Communication Cord Questions

Why does my helicopter helmet audio cut in and out?

Intermittent audio can be caused by cord wear, damaged connectors, loose wiring or repeated flexing near strain-relief points. The helmet, cord and aircraft connection should be checked before selecting a replacement.

Are military and civilian helmet cords interchangeable?

Not necessarily. Military and civilian aviation systems may use different connectors, wiring and impedance. An adapter, conversion or different cord configuration may be required.

Should I choose a coiled or straight communication cord?

Coiled cords help manage excess cable length and movement, while straight cords may be preferred for specific cockpit layouts or installations. The best option depends on the aircraft and how the helmet is used.

How do I identify the correct replacement cord?

Note the helmet model, current connector, aircraft type and any known intercom information. Aviation Survival can help review those details before ordering.
